Grades 6+
Medical and dietary supplement products, such as vitamins, are often given to humans and other animals to improve health, growth, or performance. In this activity, participants analyze data from a fictitious study on the effects of a chicken growth supplement.
Activities introduce thresholds and toxicology, the design of clinical trials, and how to determine threshold and lethal doses. They will study the positive and negative effects of the dose administered and body weight on the growth and health of the chickens, and are also given the opportunity to determine an optimum dose by considering the trade-offs between risks and benefits.
Accommodates unlimited classes, each with 32 students (8 groups of 4 students).
