DNA Starter Kit
Grades 6-12.
Students will immediately become engaged with this friendly, interactive, foam model of double-stranded DNA and single-stranded RNA. This kit is a schematic model that transforms from the familiar ladder shape to the double helix with a twist. Explore the structure of color-coded DNA bases showing purines and pyrimidines that connect to a continuous sugar-phosphate backbone. Delve into replication and transcription. Using individual nucleotide triphosphates students can synthesize a new strand of DNA (one base at a time) showing the semi-conservative replication of DNA. Finally, they can synthesize mRNA (one base at a time) to show the process of transcription. The two-group set includes 102 bases (24 red adenine, 24 yellow thymine, 24 blue cytosine, 24 green guanine, six white uracil), eight continuous gray backbones, 48 gray sugar-phosphates, 24 lavender sugar-phosphates, and 96 orange phosphates. Meets National Science Education Standards.
