Innovating Science® The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Demonstration Kit
Grades 9–12
Show students how energy can be produced from combining hydrogen and oxygen to form water.Â
In this demonstration, platinum will serve as the catalyst and electrodes will be prepared by coating metal mesh with platinum. The hydrogen and oxygen will come from electrolysis.Â
After the cell is set up, a brief current is applied with a 9V battery (not included), causing the formation of hydrogen gas bubbles on one electrode and oxygen gas bubbles on the other. Using a voltmeter, electricity produced by the recombining of hydrogen and oxygen, facilitated by the platinum metal catalyst, can be observed.Â
Contains materials for 5 demonstrations and an NGSS-aligned guide.
Kit includes:
- 15 brass metal mesh squares
- 2 red connecting wires with alligator clips
- 2 black connecting wires with alligator clips
- D-cell battery holder with clips (battery not included)
- 25 ml chloroplatinic acid, 0.005M
- Glass rod
