Students study the basic structure of the chemistry of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins by constructing three-dimensional models. Starting with the water molecule, students use easy-to-follow, individualized worksheets and color-coded plastic atoms to: construct a model of water and three monosaccharides, form a disaccharide, study isomerism, construct a part of a simple starch molecule, build models of alcohols and fatty acids, comparing them to their structural formulas, construct models of amino acids, construct four representative amino acids, and construct a protein with their models.
