Nasco Grow Your Character Classroom Kit
Grades 2–5
Just like a flower garden, good character traits need to be nurtured for them to develop. With this kit, you have everything you need to engage students in developing good character traits within themselves.
After completing this unit, students will:
- Recognize that developing good character takes time and practice
- Learn how to nurture good character traits in themselves
- Learn how to recognize good character in others
- Practice and celebrate the development of a variety of good character traits
The included lesson plan will walk you through prep and instruction, making planning quick and easy. The unit lasts about 5 weeks (up to 9 weeks if you cover all character traits).
Each week you will introduce one of nine traits in class, and then students will practice them at school and home. Traits include Patience, Compassion, Kindness, Positivity, Resilience, Responsibility, Integrity, Perseverance, and Gratitude.
Throughout each week, students will work on developing that weeks character trait and record their actions in their Flower power tracker
booklet. They can also recognize good character in their fellow students by writing behaviors they observe on slips of paper and placing them in the watering can to be read out later.
At the end of each week, students will use the materials in the kit to create flowers to represent the weeks character trait and plant
them in your classroom garden. Once the unit is complete, you can recognize each students hard work with a certificate of achievement.

Note: The lesson calls for upcycling empty cans, bottles, or jars to use as pots. You can collect containers yourself or ask students to bring a container from home.
