Grades 5–12 Help students create a short claymation using an original character (preferably non-human) to exhibit lip-sync reciting a riddle or a joke, singing a short verse of a song, or reciting a line or two of movie dialogue. This kit includes a lesson plan and enough supplies for a class of 24 students to create a short claymation video project.
Use the production process included in the lesson plan to guide them through creating their claymation project from start to finish. Students will start by creating concept art of their character, developing a storyboard, and writing a short script. After that, students will create background scenery and form the claymation character using the included materials. Next, they will use their camera, phone, or tablet to photograph the character's actions and then complete the claymation with video editing software and recorded sounds.
Before the class starts working on the project, show them examples of clay characters moving, speaking, or singing created by you or former students. For the project, introduce them to the art of claymation and how claymation uses non-hardening clay or plasticine to create movable characters and how mouth expressions and body movement adds realism to their animation.
After completing this project, students will be able to say:
- I can learn about stop motion animation.
- I can explore emotions using facial expressions.
- I can use technology to create a stop motion animation video.
