Nasco SEL Classroom Quilt Kit for Grades 6–12
Grades 6–12.
With this kit, you have everything you need to help students learn the basics of embroidery. They’ll use their new skills to create textile art that represents their community.
In this lesson, students will:
- Reflect on what makes a community
- Explore the significance of fiber arts to diverse communities
- Design a piece of fiber art to represent a community
- Learn 8 basic embroidery stitches
The included lesson plan will walk you through prep and instruction, making planning quick and easy. The unit takes about 3–4 hours or class periods.
After learning about the cultural history of textile arts representing communities, students will work together to design a community quilt. Afterward, they’ll design and embroider their own quilt squares.
When all the squares are created, you can compile everyone’s squares together to create a beautiful, colorful classroom quilt to display.
Kit includes supplies for 30 students to complete this unit:
- Lesson plan with reproducible “Basic embroidery stitches” handout
- 36 assorted skeins of embroidery floss
- 32 size 7 embroidery needles
- 1 Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue - 4 oz.
- Assorted acrylic felt - 36 sheets - 9" x 12"
- Blue fleece - 30" x 36"
- White broadcloth - 3 yds.
