Nasco Veggie Monsters Classroom Kit
Grades K–2 Even though vegetables aren't always a kid favorite, give students a chance to embrace vegetables in a fun and creative way with a shape-filled art project. This kit includes a lesson plan with complete directions and enough supplies for a class of 24 students to create veggie monsters with facial features that are inspired by the shapes of vegetables.
Before they get started, read the book The Lima Bean Monster
to the class to start a conversation about healthy eating and discuss what vegetables they like and dislike. Afterwards, introduce them to the work of artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo by showing them some of his portraits and explain how he was able to use the shapes of vegetables as facial features. Then lead them through the steps in creating colorful veggie monsters themselves that are full of color and have expressive facial features.
After completing this project, students will be able to say:
- I can understand how features of a face can change expressions
- I can identify and use a variety of shapes
- I can draw, trace, and paint a unique veggie monster
Kit includes:
